Sacco wrote and drew Palestine after spending two months in the Occupied Territories in the winter of 1991-92. He describes his work as "comic journalism". Sacco uses a comic book format to shed light on the complex and emotionally-charged situation of Palestian Arabs, exploring the lives of Israeli soldiers, Palestian refugees, and children in the Occupied Territories.
